Development Director

Location: Anchorage, AK
The Alaska zoo is currently seeking a Full Time Development Director. The Development Director will help lead and direct the staff and board to raise funds for sponsoring zoo events and to establish a comprehensive fundraising plan for operating funds, with a goal of $1 million per year. This position will work closely with the Executive Director, the Public relations firm, and Board to develop long-term development, communications & marketing strategies and implement the long-term development plan.
 
Other Job Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Create and maintain the infrastructure of the Development Department
  • Oversee event planning and implementation
  • Develop relationships with key donors, foundations and funding agencies
  • Oversee the grant writing process to include writing grants as needed or assigned, and donor cultivation
    • Apply for and manage memberships with programs such as Pick. Click. Give., CFC, Mayor’s Charity Ball
  • Apply innovative techniques to continually increase funding for current and new programs
  • Provide Executive Director and Board with timely and frequent campaign reports and analyses
  • Develop and launch community campaign strategies
  • Work closely with the Office Manager and staff to maintain donor database
  • Keep informed on the current state of the Alaska Zoo and upcoming projects and events
  • Create and maintain budgets for each function/event that has a fundraising goal
  • Develop and implement strategy to build and increase the endowment fund for the Zoo
    • Maintain and manage social media presence and public relations with Facebook, Instagram, and Trip Adviser.
    • Media liaison.  Escort media while on Zoo grounds.  Be comfortable talking with media on and off camera.  Schedule media interviews with Executive Director, Keepers, Education Dept., Veterinarians, etc.
 
Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • 5 years of experience in development, marketing and/or communications
  • Experience in conceiving a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes membership and other annual giving, events, and endowments preferred
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills
  • Not-for-profit experience preferred
  • Experience managing capital campaigns preferred
 
The salary for this position depends on experience. The Alaska Zoo offers a benefits package that is available after 90 days employment.
