LEV is the premiere Washington-based organization working to improve public education from early learning through higher education. What are we looking for?
We are looking for a Government and Community Relations Director that is a high-level strategist and manager who can both design strategy and manage to completion, via oversight of these teams and through collaboration with our policy research, communications and development teams.  This position is a member of the executive leadership team.
‘Day in the life’:
  • Externally-facing right-hand person who can speak on behalf of the organization; serve as a key partner to the CEO at the strategic level
  • Translate evidence/promising practices for and trends in improving education at the federal, state, and local levels into short-and long-term government relations and field strategy
  • Lead and direct relationships with elected officials, community-based organizational partners, and students, parents, and educators
  • Grow the field/community relations and government relations presence as a strong partner in fund development and entrepreneurial programming and identify key strategic revenue generation opportunities
  • Campaign design, development, and strategy; events management
  • Directly engage in specific policy areas that the organization addresses (lobbying, engagement, communications)
  • Manage two externally facing teams (field/community relations and government relations/contract lobbyists) Perform internal management functions to support your team
  • Develop and manage teams’ annual budgets
  • Develop and manage field annual and five year statewide field plans
  • Manage and report on weekly/monthly field data
  • Negotiate and mediate between organizational teams with different visions and responsibilities; Significant matrix management
  • Community and coalition organizing and relationship building, build shared partnerships
  • Comfortable working with a nonprofit board of directors, advisory councils, and organizational donors, including board policy and strategy committee
  • Write content and supervise writing of reports, memos, briefs, media pieces, and action alerts
  • Work-planning and providing professional mentoring and support, as well as discipline to team
  • Support Resource Development on writing, implementing, tracking, and reporting on grant funding
  • Administer organization’s endorsement process for legislative and executive elective contests
  • Culturally competent and aware of organizational strategies towards undoing institutionalized racism, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Personally able to handle change, conflict, competing priorities, with ability to manage ‘up’ and create solution-oriented approaches
  • Frequent interruptions and travel (mostly in-state) and will sometimes include evening and weekend meetings.

  • Expertise in systems of public and private education in Washington State, education reform policy, innovation in education, and state of the education field and passionate about student-centered approaches
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state-level governance, the legislative process, state-level education systems and governance, and lobbying
  • Demonstrated experience designing and leading policy issue campaigns, including legislative advocacy and political work, with knowledge of latest campaign tools
  • Can see ahead to next opportunities / obstacles and effective at leveraging support to achieve cutting-edge policy
  • Inspirational and motivational manager and skilled at bringing remote teams together

What do we require?
  • Minimum 4 year degree; Preferred Masters or other advanced degree in education policy, law, public policy, or related field
  • Entrepreneurial experience and approach with nonprofit organizations
  • Minimum 8-10 years’ experience
  • Management of political or issue-based campaigns, including legislative lobbying
  • Experience with community mobilization software platforms, including CRM
  • Polished communications skills, in writing, in person and speaking in public on complex issues
  • Proficiency with modern electronic advocacy tools and technology
  • Knowledge of public education issues and some familiarity with the local and state legislative and electoral processes in WA
  • Experience in developing field outreach and government relations strategies and plans and experience supervising remote staff
  • Experience managing a budget and reporting on grant deliverables
  • Proven nonprofit management experience in organization engaged in direct policy research, advocacy and political activity
